Meet Shelana J-Jobs

J-Jobs Program, funded by JCA The Choice Foundation.

Meet Rebecca, a young woman with disability who faced significant challenges when it comes to finding and keeping a job. Despite her talent, skills, and undeniable drive, she struggled to find an employer who was willing to accommodate her needs and provide her with an opportunity to use her creativity and interact with people.

Through JCA The Choice Foundation’s program, J-Jobs, Rebecca was assisted to focus on identifying her strengths and interests and career goals. With the help of the J-Jobs team, Rebecca was matched to an employer who recognised her potential and was willing to work with her to create a job that met her needs and provided her with the kind of work she had always dreamed of.

With the right accommodations and support, Rebecca is thriving in her new position at Salon Lane, developing new skills, building relationships with her colleagues, and making an impact in her workplace.

As a person living with disability, finding a job is often a challenging and overwhelming task. However, Salon Lane has welcomed Rebecca with open arms and given her a chance to prove her worth. Their belief in her abilities has played a vital role in boosting her confidence and helps her to perform to the best of her ability, and most importantly, given her a sense of purpose and belonging.

Customised employment can have a profound impact on someone with an intellectual disability. It provides them with an opportunity to use their unique skills and abilities, enabling them to contribute to society and gain a sense of purpose. This leads to increased job satisfaction, improved self-esteem, and a higher quality of life. Moreover, customised employment promotes inclusion in the workplace, fostering a sense of belonging and reducing stigma, often associated with intellectual disability. Overall, customised employment can transform the lives of individuals with disability, empowering them to achieve their full potential and participate fully in society.

JewishCare and JCA The Choice Foundation are extremely grateful to employers who make the decision to hire someone with disability, giving them a fair chance in the workplace, showing kindness, inclusivity, and compassion.

For me, witnessing the positive impact that the work I do through J-Jobs can have on individuals and their families has been incredibly rewarding. It is so inspiring to see the improvements in self-esteem, financial independence and overall quality of life that can occur when individuals living with disability are given the opportunity to participate fully in the workplace.

For Rebecca, the impact J-Jobs has had has been life-changing. Not only did she finally find a job that matched her skills and interests, but she is also a valued member of the workforce.
