Siblings, Love ‘em
Hey guys its Em here! Back again with another blog. For this blog, I decided to do an interview with a gorgeous girl who has a sister with a disability. I interviewed Mia Levine and asked her some questions about her relationship with her younger sister Ella (18) who has autism.
1. What disability does your sibling have and when was she diagnosed?
My sister Ella has autism, I believe she was diagnosed around the age of 2 or 3 as a result of my parents recognising signs of delay in her achievement of developmental milestones
2. How many siblings do you have and do you have a good relationship with them?
I have one sister. Ella and I have a beautiful relationship that is comprised of pure joy, love and admiration. I believe this kind of relationship is rare in a sibling dynamic as we do not argue or bicker like most siblings. We get along very well and understand each other’s personalities on an intimate level
3. What activities do you like to do together?
We like to go out for meals together, cook or bake and watch tv shows like MasterChef and the bachelor. However, we definitely do both love our own space, so we find a lot of joy and comfort from just sitting together doing our own thing.
4. What are the hardest and best things about having a sibling with a disability?
Having a sibling with a disability certainly comes with its challenges, but they are significantly outweighed by the positive aspects. I think that something that is important to remember with regards to people with disabilities in general is that simple things are not always simple. Seemingly ordinary activities may require more preparation and planning than they would for others.
Having a sibling with a disability gives you a different kind of perspective which
allows you to see the beauty and joy in so much of life. The simple and mundane becomes exciting, and the frustrating and aggravating becomes an opportunity for growth. Particularly in my case, I see how my sister sees the good in all people, I see how she does not judge, and I see how deeply she loves. These are the things that really matter in life. I am eternally grateful to all I have learnt from my sister.
